From this to this.
Tutorial - Coloring B&W photos for color splash icon
Programs - Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 (for most) but I used IrfanView 64 for resizing for icon usage. But resizing can be done in any program.
Level - Easy
Their is probably some that go over this on Livejournal or even here on Dreamwidth that I haven't found yet. But figured a step by step would be easier to follow then showing and saying. I am probably going to suck at explaining this, but will do the best I can. Their are a few ways to achieve color splash on a black but this is the quickest way I know how. You can also do this with a texture or a paint brush.
Step One - Find an image you want and resize it to 100x100. I'm going to use the one Val was using which is a black and white of Taylor Swift.
Step Two - Copy and paste it as a new icon layer in whatever program you have that you use to make icons. Like so:

Step Three - Next your going to make another layer ontop of it. First your going to go to where you see your icon in the preview bar and right click then the options should appear. Next your going to click on 'New Raster Layer' and press okay. You should have this:

Then click okay:

Step Four - Now that is done you have a white layer to play with. Go to your color pick options in your program.

Step Five - Pick any color your want, we are doing green for this picture to color in the leaves in the background.

Step Six - Next your going to get the flood fill bucket (not sure what it's called in other programs). And position it over your icon, then you click on your icon and it should fill the icon with the color you picked.

Step Seven - Next comes the fun part! Figuring out which options you want to use. It's called 'blend mode' in my program.

I choose 'color' cause I like how the green pops, but you can choose any.
Step Eight - Next you will get your eraser tool and erase the parts you don't want colored.

Step Nine - Once you done the erasing, it should look like this or however you choose to do the colored part.

Step Ten - Once your done erasing your going to merge all layers and save your icon. And their you have it your done!
